The Lauder Research Center is the Met's dedicated centre for the study of modern art, and its fellowships are among the best-funded in the field: $50,000 for pre-doctoral, $60,000 post-doctoral, $70,000 senior and $30,000 for the non-residential track, with a research travel allowance on top for residential fellows. Fellows get office space in the Research Center and take part in writing workshops, works-in-progress presentations and discussions held in the museum's galleries — access to the collection and to the Met's curatorial community being the part money cannot buy. The non-residential fellow may also spend two weeks at the centre.

Four tracks for the 2027–28 academic year: pre-doctoral fellowships of two years for PhD candidates writing a thesis; post-doctoral fellowships of one or two years for scholars within seven years of the doctorate working on a book; a one-year mid-career fellowship for established scholars with a publication record; and a non-residential fellowship for doctoral dissertation completion. This is a scholarly programme in modern art history rather than a studio residency.
