The Otto Mauer Prize has been awarded since 1981 in the name of the Viennese priest and gallerist who backed post-war Austrian avant-garde when almost nobody else did, and it remains one of the most substantial prizes for an artist under 45 in the country. It rewards a body of work rather than a single piece: €15,000, a solo exhibition at the JesuitenFoyer in the first district and a serious press campaign around it. The fund also intends to buy a representative work for the Otto Mauer Collection at the Dom Museum Wien, which puts the winner into a public collection. The 2026 jury is chaired for the first time by Johanna Schwanberg, director of the Dom Museum, with the artists Iris Andraschek and Cäcilia Brown, the curator Rainer Fuchs, the critic Klaus Speidel and Luisa Ziaja, chief curator of the Belvedere.

Open to artists with Austrian citizenship or at least five years of permanent residence in Austria, aged 45 or under on 31 December 2026 (born 1981 or later); for a group application the age limit applies to every member. The award covers painting, graphic art, sculpture, object art, installation and new media. Submission is a documentation of the work so far — catalogues, photographs, texts, videos, no originals — plus a CV and one to three web links.
