Escola Normal is a historic house in Porto run by the artists who live in it, where residents share meals, rehearsals, walks to concerts and the occasional spontaneous collaboration. Residents have a private bedroom and access to music, photography, visual arts and sewing studios, presentation spaces, a communal kitchen, laundry, garden and vegetable garden, and to the cultural programme of the house — concerts, exhibitions and events running during the stay. Depending on the project, the house can add mentoring and technical support in music production, audiovisual documentation and project development. There are no mandatory outcomes: an informal presentation, open studio or performance is encouraged but never required. Stays run from a week upward and the rhythm is agreed with each artist.

Open to artists of all disciplines and at any stage of practice — musicians, dancers, writers, photographers, filmmakers, visual artists, performers, textile practitioners and those whose work resists definition. Formal education, institutional recognition and previous residencies are not required; selection looks at the fit of the project to the house, the motivation behind it and the potential for exchange. Applications arrive as a single PDF and are reviewed on a rolling basis.
