The Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) is the Québec government’s arts council; its grants for artists are assessed by peer juries, and its studio and residency network places Québec artists abroad in exchange with partner venues.

A two-month residency in May and June 2027 at the Internationales Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia, the international artists’ house founded by the Free State of Bavaria in a baroque palace on the Regnitz in Bamberg’s UNESCO-listed old town, which hosts a small international group of artists each year and runs public events. CALQ grants CA$8,000; the resident is expected to be in Bamberg most of the time. The programme gives time entirely devoted to the project plus meetings and networking with an international artistic community; in return a Bavarian artist is hosted at the Maison de la littérature in Québec City. Run with the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts.

Québec writers eligible for CALQ Mid-career or Development grants (more than two years of practice; storytellers and spoken-word artists with at least one solo creation in a peer-recognised context) and comics artists with more than two years of practice who have published one or more albums with a peer-recognised publisher or in cultural periodicals. Professional artists who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, ordinarily reside in Québec and have lived there for the past 12 months; groups are not eligible.
