Jack Straw Cultural Center in Seattle has run the Artist Support Program since 1994 (the 2027 round is its 34th year), giving artists of all genres professional recording time they could not otherwise afford. A multidisciplinary panel of established artists, changed every year, selects the awardees.

Up to eight artists or teams receive 20 hours of free recording and production time with a Jack Straw engineer; another 10–12 receive matching awards. Projects — for example recording a music album, producing radio programs or oral histories — are presented to the public at Jack Straw events and other venues. Remote recording, editing and mixing are possible when physical presence is not required.

Established and emerging artists in any discipline or genre, as individuals or teams; artists may apply to only one Jack Straw residency program per year. Artists outside the Puget Sound region may apply, but travel and lodging are not included. Jack Straw staff, interns, board members and their immediate families may not apply, and 2026 participants cannot reapply to the same program for 2027. The project proposal must include sound as a major component.
