The Canton of St. Gallen's Werkbeiträge pay for the creative phase before production — researching, developing and rethinking a project — for artists in all disciplines with a link to the canton. Eighteen grants of CHF 20,000 are awarded each year by specialist juries.

A creation grant of CHF 20,000 that funds the research and development phase of an artistic or historical project — developing a stage piece, a novel or a series of works — giving the freedom to work out a project, take new artistic paths or deepen research. The canton awards 18 grants a year across all fields; specialist juries assess relevance, echo, independence and professionalism in March and April.

Cultural practitioners who have lived in the canton of St. Gallen for at least twelve months, or who previously had their residence or centre of life there for at least twelve years. Fields: applied art and design, visual art, history and memory, literature, music, theatre and dance (film and cultural participation have their own instruments). One field per application. Not for training projects, PR, tourism or business promotion, completed or already funded projects, commissioned work, or reproducing finished works. Applying excludes a St. Gallen studio stay in Rome or Berlin in the same year.
