Sounding Like a Mountain — Five-Week Visual Arts Thematic Residency on Sound, Land and Listening, Banff Centre 2027

A thematic visual-arts residency at Banff Centre inviting projects that consider how places sing, how memory persists in vibration and how listening to the land can re-orient ethical and political relations — drawing on acoustic ecology and the mountains of Banff, and on how sound activates temporalities shaped by land use, migration, ecological disruption and colonial infrastructures.

Five weeks (17 May – 18 June 2027) of project-based studio practice with an individual studio, access to shared production facilities and staff technicians, faculty-led activities, one-to-one mentorship through studio visits, open lectures and a geological walk and land-based learning. Faculty: Xenia Benivolski (sound studies and visual art), Elina Waage Mikalsen (Sámi-Norwegian artist and musician) and guest Kathryn Yusoff (Professor of Inhuman Geography, Queen Mary University of London). The programme fee includes a single bedroom, meals contribution through the scholarship and access to fitness facilities; open studios close the programme.

Individual artists or duos (no more than two collaborators) at any stage of their career, aged 18+ at the programme start, available for the full five weeks, with post-secondary training in visual arts or equivalent experience and recognition from peers through traditional knowledge and practices. Domestic and international applicants are welcome (international participants need a Visitor Visa). Practices include ceramics, digital media, painting, drawing, printmaking and papermaking, performance art, photography, sculpture and installation.
