The French Academy in Rome has occupied the Villa Medici above the Spanish Steps since 1803, and its fellowship is one of the oldest and most substantial residencies in Europe: a full year in Rome — September 2027 to August 2028 — with a grant, accommodation and a workspace on the grounds, inside an institution that is simultaneously a residency, an art centre with its own exhibition and concert programme, and a historic site. Sixteen fellows are chosen across all disciplines, so the cohort is deliberately mixed.

Open to established artists, creators, authors and researchers over eighteen of any nationality, provided they speak French; former fellows of the Academy cannot reapply. Disciplines run from literary and artistic creation to crafts, art history and theory, and the restoration of works or monuments. Selection is in two stages — a review of applications, then an audition — before a jury chaired by the Academy's director with a representative of the French Ministry of Culture and six appointed specialists.
