Each artist receives a US$20,000 grant covering travel, lodging and a daily food allowance, plus a US$5,000 stipend after the residency. Fellows produce three editions in relief, lithography and screen printing and keep half of each edition; the programme includes visits to studios and museums in Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore and Washington, DC.

This year the fellowships are offered to Africa-born, US-based artists (because of visa restrictions); the programme normally serves artists living and working in Africa. It is aimed at artists committed to a career as a visual artist, particularly those disadvantaged by socioeconomic factors and/or with limited access to the art market, gallery representation and institutional support. Self-taught artists may apply.
