Five grants of $12,000 each, $60,000 in total. The award amount is fixed and cannot be more or less. Big Car makes one payment to the lead artist and requires a W-9. Award income is taxable. The budget must balance: total income, including the award, has to equal total expenses, so costs above $12,000 need other income or a smaller plan. The 2026 timeline lists finalist interviews online on 9 December and email notification on 15 December, both dates written in brackets, and a public announcement on Friday 18 December 2026. The guidelines page says finalists are interviewed in Indianapolis. The jurors page names Elliot Josephine Leila Reichert, Quinn Tailor, Sidney Mori Garrett and Tim Parsley. Big Car staff administer the program and do not vote.
publicSeo.openCall.eligibility
You must live in Indiana. Working here is not enough — residency is required. You must be 21 or older on the application deadline. You may not be a full-time student. Teams, partnerships, and unincorporated collectives are eligible. The lead artist must live in Indiana. Other participants may live elsewhere. Organizations holding 501(c)(3) status cannot apply. Employees and board members of Big Car Collaborative, and their immediate family, cannot apply. The guidelines say past recipients may apply again once they have successfully completed their funded project. The About page says previous recipients are eligible only if it has been a minimum of two years since the date of their award, and the project and grant requirements have been completed successfully. The About page also says artists must be over 21 at the time of the application. New for 2026: eligibility is open to artists living anywhere in Indiana. A final performance, exhibition, or event funded by the grant must take place in Indiana. Music, literary, and theater projects are not funded as the project itself; they can be components of a visual project.
