Culture Push
Culture Push, a New York non-profit, launched the Fellowship for Utopian Practice in 2012 as a process-based testing ground for projects joining art, civic engagement and social justice. Past Fellows have made free libraries, worked with people affected by incarceration, and engaged communities around power plants and flooding. Projects are meant as series of public actions, not exhibitions.

Six to eight Fellows receive a $2,250 stipend, fiscal sponsorship for further fundraising, strategy meetings with production and development support, a mentor and a thought partner, access to Materials for the Arts, promotion through the Culture Push network, a chance to edit the journal PUSH/PULL, and presentations at the annual Culture Push Symposium and a public showcase with past and current Fellows. Culture Push does not provide a venue but helps Fellows secure sites.

Open to artists and other professionals in any discipline with at least 3 years of experience in their field; currently enrolled undergraduate students may not apply. Projects must be new, socially engaged work with no prior institutional support, taking place with a specific neighbourhood or community within the five boroughs of New York City; residence within commuting distance of the five boroughs is required. Group or collaborative proposals are welcome. Applicants choose one track: the general Fellowship, or the Black Utopian, Climate Justice or Disability Arts + Dreaming Fellowship.
