The Center’s Fellowship (formerly Right of Return), founded in 2017 by artists Jesse Krimes and Russell Craig, supports formerly incarcerated creatives working in visual art, film, music, creative writing, performance, design and multidisciplinary practices who have a demonstrated capacity to advance social change.

An annual award of $10,000 in unrestricted funds and $10,000 in project development funds, mentorship and community building, and an annual retreat to network with previous fellows, advocates, industry leaders and funders and to present the project to the cohort. Six fellows are selected by external reviewers; one fellowship is designated for an artist aged 18–24.

Directly impacted artists of all creative disciplines, ages 18 or older — those who have themselves been incarcerated in U.S. prisons, jails, or detention centers (people detained in migrant detention centers must since have attained U.S. citizenship). Projects and applicants must be U.S. based, including all 50 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico. Individual artists only, at any career stage, with or without formal training; the artist must collaborate with an advocacy organization during the project (it need not be secured at application).
