Since 2014 The Image Centre at Toronto Metropolitan University has offered research fellowships related to photography; in 2027 it offers six, of which the Howard Tanenbaum Fellowship is for artistic research.

A CAD 4,000 stipend for travel, research and related expenses (paid in two instalments) and on-site access to the IMC’s Peter Higdon Research Centre and collections — including the Black Star Collection of photo-reportage — for one to four weeks between 15 February and 15 December 2027. Production facilities such as printing labs and darkrooms are not included.

Canadian and international applicants at any level of education, and/or independent artists with relevant experience, who will use the collections of The Image Centre and/or Toronto Metropolitan University Archives and Special Collections in support of their artistic practice, with creative methodologies and outputs and awareness of copyright in using historical images. Past IMC fellows may not reapply for five years.
