The City of San Diego’s Poet Laureate programme, run by the Economic Development Department’s Cultural Affairs division through its Public Art Program, appoints a civic poet for a two-year term.

The selected poet becomes the City of San Diego’s third Poet Laureate for 1 January 2027 – 31 December 2028: an ambassador for poetry, spoken word and the literary arts who writes original work inspired by the city’s diverse communities, reads at City Council meetings and civic events, proposes and leads a public project that brings poetry into residents’ everyday lives, and serves as a juror for Poetry Out Loud. Budget about $20,000, all-inclusive (including travel), under a City agreement administered by Cultural Affairs.
