Since 1996 the Pola Art Foundation has funded young Japanese artists to train abroad under a mentor or institution for six months to a year. It is one of Japan's main overseas-study grants for visual artists, craftspeople and conservators under 40.

About 20 grants a year of up to ¥3.6 million for 12 months of training abroad (up to ¥7.2 million for conservation and restoration). Training must start between 1 April 2027 and 31 March 2028 and last six months to one year (conservation up to two years). A selection committee of experts judges originality and contribution to the art world.

Artists working in painting, sculpture, crafts and other creative fields, or people working in exhibition planning, conservation and restoration, or education. Applicants must be aged 20 or over and under 40 on 1 April 2027, hold Japanese nationality or Japanese permanent residency, train under a supervisor abroad with a written acceptance from the host, not hold a full-time job during the training, have the necessary language skills, and not have received this grant before. One application per person; no joint, team or group applications.
