The Smithsonian American Art Museum's fellowship programme, founded in 1970 and described by the museum as the oldest and largest in the world for the study of American art, hosts fellows through the Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program and its own named fellowships. Residencies are open to conservators, artists, graduate students, doctoral candidates and postdoctoral and senior scholars.

Stipends of $10,000 for 10-week graduate fellows, $45,000 a year for predoctoral and $57,000 a year for postdoctoral and senior fellows (prorated), plus up to $5,000 for research trips, a $100–$1,000 relocation allowance and $100 a month towards Smithsonian health insurance for longer stays. Tenures run between 1 June 2027 and 31 August 2028. Applicants proposing a SAAM advisor are automatically considered for the museum's named fellowships, including the Will Barnet, Joe and Wanda Corn, Douglass Foundation, Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, Patricia and Phillip Frost, George Gurney, Virginia Mecklenburg, William H. Truettner and Wyeth Foundation Predoctoral fellowships.

Scholars from any discipline researching American art, craft and visual culture. Applicants must identify a member of SAAM's research staff as primary fellowship advisor and are encouraged to contact potential advisors in advance. Applicants whose native language is not English are expected to write and converse fluently in English; all application materials must be in English. Levels: graduate students (MA and PhD students not yet advanced to candidacy, enrolled at a degree-granting institution), predoctoral candidates doing dissertation research, and postdoctoral and senior scholars (postdoctoral: PhD within the last five years).
