Since 2015 the not-for-profit Winter Stations has invited artists, architects, designers and students to reimagine Toronto's winter-dormant lifeguard stations as interactive public art installations, turning the city's beaches into an open-air exhibition. Each winning proposal (4–6 are built, depending on funding) is fabricated with CA$5,000 for materials and CA$10,000 for labour and exhibited for six weeks on Toronto's waterfront; each winning artist or team receives a CA$2,000 honorarium. The Winter Stations team may help refine designs so they can be built safely within budget. Selection is by a blind jury of Toronto leaders in art, design, architecture and urbanism.

Open to everyone, everywhere — artists, architects, designers and students, individuals or teams. Proposals must fit the budget (CA$5,000 materials, CA$10,000 labour), be exhibitable without fastening to or modifying the lifeguard stands, work on sand, snow and asphalt, not exceed 10 m² if roofed or walled, use no electricity or fire (solar at the organisers' discretion), fit a 7′ × 18′ trailer and store in a shipping container. Entries in English; anonymous for the blind jury.
