Banff Centre's Summer Opera is an intensive professional program centred on contemporary opera and new work. Singers, conductors and stage directors rehearse and perform two new operas with an international faculty, alongside masterclasses, seminars and informal sharings in Banff Centre's performance venues.

Four weeks (5–31 July 2027) of individual and group vocal coaching, role study, language work, acting and movement, conducting and stage-directing mentorship, masterclasses and public performances, built around new operas by Niloufar Nourbakhsh and Cecilia Livingston and scenes from the classical repertoire. The Banff Centre Arts Scholarship covers tuition and part of room and meals. Singers can audition in person in Calgary, Vancouver, Cincinnati, Toronto or Montreal (12–20 November 2026) instead of by video.

For emerging and early-career singers, conductors and stage directors with strong foundational training or equivalent professional experience and an interest in contemporary repertoire; no specific degree is required. Participants must attend the whole program. Applicants must be 18+ at the time of the program start date; domestic and international applications are welcome.
