How common age limits are
Upper age limits are rare: 74 of the 1,583 open calls. The usual caps are 30, 35 and 40; the table counts them. A lower limit is more common — 18 and over, in most cases — so most calls are for adults of any age.
Calls for young artists
Open calls for artists aged 35 and under, in the catalogue now: 43. Many are prizes for young artists or national programmes for early careers. The hub of calls for artists aged 35 and under lists them all.
How the age is counted
Read the rule exactly. “Under 35” can mean you must not have turned 35, or must not turn 35 in the year of the call; some calls count on the deadline, others on 31 December. “Born after 1990” is precise. If the rule is unclear, ask.
Emerging is not the same as young
Many calls for emerging artists have no age limit; they count years of practice, solo shows or the lack of a gallery. If you started late, look for those rather than for calls for young artists.
Students
Open calls only for current students: 6. Others welcome students alongside everyone else.
