What the rules say
Most open calls were written before AI tools were common and do not mention them. Where they do, the rule is usually a ban on work generated or largely made with AI, sometimes with an exception for tools used in editing. A few ask you to disclose how you used AI; very few welcome AI work.
Where bans are most common
Competitions and exhibition calls ban AI most often: they judge finished images, and a jury cannot always tell. The table shows the bans by type of call.
Silence is not permission
When a call says nothing (95% of the open calls), the organiser has not decided, or takes human-made work for granted. If your work uses AI in any way that matters, ask before you apply: a disqualification later costs more than the question.
Disclose when asked, and keep your files
If a call asks how a work was made, answer plainly. Keep the files that show your process — sketches, raw images, layers — in case the organiser asks for them.
