What “fully funded” can mean
Organisers use the words for very different packages. One residency gives a flat, a studio, a monthly stipend, travel and a production budget; another gives a room and a desk and calls itself funded. Read the list of what is provided, not the label. The catalogue counts only what the organiser’s terms state: housing, a stipend or fee, travel, a studio, a production budget.
What residencies in Europe give
Of the residencies in Europe open now — housing: 116; a stipend or fee: 118; both: 87; travel: 57; a studio: 148; a production budget: 28. Fully funded: 79. The table lists the countries with the most residencies.
Residencies the artist pays for
Some residencies are paid by the artist: a weekly or monthly rate for a room and a studio. That is not a scam in itself — some are good places to work — but it is not funding. Self-funded residencies in Europe now: 34. They are left out of the hubs of residencies with housing and with a stipend.
Fees to apply
Free to apply: 72 of the residencies in Europe open now. A fee to apply or to take part: 39. A fee charged only to the selected residents is a fee too.
Who can apply
Many residencies in Europe are international; others are for artists from one country, often through a cultural institute or an exchange. A residency in Germany for artists based in Hungary is not open to everyone. Check the eligibility line: country of residence or citizenship, career stage, age, language.
How to apply well
Residencies choose a person and a project together. Say what you will do there and why that place: a collection, a landscape, a community, a workshop. Keep to the format they ask for. Plan for what a residency does not cover, such as insurance, a visa or materials.
